Biography

Jane M. Tyler, 65, of Somers, died peacefully at home on Thursday (October 23, 2008). Mrs. Tyler was born October 19, 1943 to the late Thomas and Harriet Mullowney of Baldwin, NY. In addition to her husband, attorney Bruce D. Tyler, Mrs. Tyler is survived by her daughter, ... and son... Mrs. Tyler graduated from the Newton College of the Sacred Heart (Boston College) and earned a Master's Degree in teaching from Manhattanville College. A talented and natural teacher, her enthusiasm for learning inspired the many students who passed through her classroom in the Somers public school system from 1983–2001. Among her contributions to education in Somers are, standardization of the sixth grade science curriculum and the program for primary school gifted and talented students, which she designed and implemented. Mrs. Tyler initiated the Presidential Academic Fitness Awards at her school, and in addition to other awards for excellence in teaching, she received the University of Connecticut's Middle School Science Teacher of the Year Award. By fostering intellectual curiosity for its own sake and connecting civic engagement to any subject she taught, Mrs. Tyler served her students and her community. Mrs. Tyler had a gift with words and music. She was well known as a clever lyricist who could write new verse to old songs, and her subtle sense of humor enriched the lives of others. She had an especially clear singing voice and could play on the piano any tune she heard. The wit and laughter she brought into the lives of those who knew her is sorely missed. As an only child herself, Mrs. Tyler treasured and remained close to her cousins throughout her life, especially Eileen M. Mello, Mary Agnes Mullowney, Patricia M. Starkey, and Alice Mullowney, who were of great comfort to her during the long course of her illness. The family expresses deep appreciation also to Julieann Dobosz for her support to them and the loving care she provided to Jane. Funeral services in celebration of Jane's life will be held on Monday, October 27, with the funeral procession forming at 9 a.m. from Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels, 43 Shaker Rd., Enfield to St. Catherine's Church in Broad Brook, for a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial. Interment will follow in St. Catherine's Cemetery. Friends may call at Browne Memorial Funeral Chapels on Sunday, October 26, from 2-6 p.m. Those looking for suggestions for memorial gifts might consider either, the Student Activities Fund of the Mabelle B.
